Meet Our Therapists 

Northwinds Counseling Services, P.A. was established in 2006 to meet the mental health needs of the Twin Cities' northwest community, including Rogers, Maple Grove, Elk River, St. Michael, Albertville and Champlin.  We are a seasoned group of professional Licensed Mental Health Therapists with varying backgrounds. At Northwinds Counseling Services, we offer a warm and safe environment where individuals and families can come to gain new perspective and to experience opportunities for personal growth.


Kevin Smith, MA, LMFT, Clinical Director

Kevin is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). He has over 18 years counseling experience in a variety of settings that include clinical mental health, chemical dependency, behavior modification, pharmaceuticals, and public education prior to starting a private practice in 2001. Kevin has received much of his clinical experience from Karl Menninger Hospital in Kansas and Hazeldon Center for Youth and Family in Minnesota. He has a Bachelor's degree from Bethel College and holds a Master of Arts in Psychology from Alfred Adler Graduate School. Kevin specializes in working with adults, couples and teenagers dealing with relational concerns. Areas of interest include Depression, Anxiety, Attention Deficit Disorder, Grief and Loss, Chemical Dependency support, and Anger Management. He utilizes a family systems approach that considers the client within the context of all relationships and operates from a strength-based perspective using encouragement and empowerment.

Libby Collins, MA, LMFT

Libby is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1988, where she majored in Psychology and Social Welfare. In 2000, Libby graduated from Adler Graduate School with a Master of Arts degree in Counseling. After working for the Wayzata School system for eight years, Libby joined St. David’s Center in 2004 to continue her work with children and families. Throughout her career, Libby has helped clients who struggle with multiple issues including: anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit disorders and family change due to death, divorce or other family stresses. Libby has been a member of the Association of Play Therapy since 2005 and is a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. Libby utilizes play therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy and other therapeutic approaches during her sessions. She has co-facilitated groups for children with anxiety disorders and with autism spectrum disorders and has spoken on the topics of anxiety and attention deficit disorders.   

Rocky Beaty, MA, LMFT

Rocky is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). Rocky received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee in 1994, majoring in Nutrition and Food Science, and received his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University in 2003. Rocky’s practice has included working with children, adolescents and their families, adolescent group therapy, parenting groups for families, and children with disabilities.  He also provides couples therapy and individual therapy for adults. Rocky’s training has included: anxiety and its effects on daily lives; personal strengths; and cultural awareness. Beyond his therapy caseload Rocky has provided clinical supervision at St David’s Child Development and Family Services.  He writes and speaks on topics such as "Anxiety in Adolescence and the Family" and "New Therapists in the Field and the Challenges They Face." 

Believing that relationships are the basis for change and growth, Rocky works from a systems perspective, encompassing strength-based therapy as well as narrative and relational therapy. Rocky specializes in helping clients deal with challenges that include: Anxiety Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, grief, communication, relational issues and the family’s understanding of Asperger’s Disorder, Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder.


Jesse Ellis, MA, LMFT

Jesse is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Bethel University and his Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University's Minnesota of School of Professional Psychology. Jesse is a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and the Minnesota Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. Jesse has worked in the human services field for nearly ten years, including working with individuals with developmental disabilities in group homes, adolescents in a residential drug treatment facility, high school students in an alternative high school setting, and in-home therapy services to individuals and families.

Jesse offers therapy services to individuals, couples, and families, including adults, adolescents, and children. He helps clients with a variety of issues, including relationship difficulties, communication, conflict, depression, anxiety, stress, and oppositional behaviors in children/adolescents. Jesse offers a free initial 30-minute consultation.  


Jana Sczepanski Palkert, RN, MA, LMFT

Jana is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Nursing from St. Catherine University and her Master of Arts degree from the MN School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University Twin Cities.  Jana has over 20 years of combined clinical experience treating individuals, families and couples dealing with emotional, relational and psychological struggles in a multitude of clinical settings such as:  in-patient/out-patient mental health, in-home family therapy, public health, school-based counseling, and occupational health. Jana sees a wide variety of clientèle in her current practice.  Her areas of interest include helping those seeking therapy for relationship issues, child/adolescent cognitive and behavioral challenges, adoption, parent/child conflicts, family stress, chronic illness and trauma/loss.  She specializes in working with couples experiencing conflict, sexual difficulties, infidelity, or dissatisfaction utilizing the Imago and Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy Models. She also specializes in family medical therapy; counseling and consulting individuals/families with medically challenging/life altering illness or chronic disease such as cancer, obesity, chronic pain, or autoimmune diseases. Lastly, Jana has a special interest in helping individuals seeking post traumatic recovery/growth from sexual, physical or verbal abuse, and other traumatic experiences; including extensive training in EMDR (www.emdria.com). Jana is a clinical member of both the MN and American Associations of Marriage and Family Therapy.  Functioning from a systems and strength-based perspective, you will find Jana's approach non-judgmental and compassionate, one that will encourage and empower you to face your challenges and move toward healing.
